Day 1 - May 19, 2026, 9:00AM to 12:00 PM (PST)
Day 2 - May 21, 2026, 9:00AM to 12:00 PM (PST)
Training Description
Despite overwhelming evidence and broad clinical consensus that co-occurring disorders should be addressed and treated simultaneously, systems of care continue to operate in silos—often leading to fragmented care and poorer outcomes. Integrated treatment where addiction and mental health disorders are treated at the same time often by the same team leads to:
Better engagement and retention
Reduced use
Improved psychiatric/psychological symptoms
Lower relapse rates
Reduced hospitalization
This 2-day workshop provides an overview of Integrated Treatment for Co-Occurring Disorders (ITCD) for behavioral health providers. Participants will explore why co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders are most effectively addressed through integrated, stage-matched approaches rather than siloed systems of care.
The training examines core treatment models, stages of change, the role of the provider, strategies for engagement, and harm reduction principles, with an emphasis on clinical decision-making and continuity of care.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to identify at least two risk factors for co-occurring disorders when screening for COD and determining the need for further evaluation and diagnosis in the clinical setting.
- Participants will be able to explain at least one reason why the best practice of treating co-occurring disorders is integrated treatment and at least one alternative way to proceed if that best practice of integrated treatment is not possible in the clinical setting.
- Participants will be able to apply the six dimensions of the ASAM assessment to guide service planning and treatment in the clinical setting.
- Participants will be able to explain how to stage clients using the stages of change and identify what interventions to implement based on that stage when working with clients with COD.
- Participants will be able to specify appropriate use of the Motivational Interviewing Tool, Readiness, Importance, and Confidence Ruler, as well as prepare two questions to elicit change talk when working with clients with COD.
- Participants will be able to explain what cultural competency looks like and why it is essential when working with clients with co-occurring disorders.
