Training Description
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (said as the word “act”), is a present focused, experiential, and values-based behavioral health intervention designed to increase psychological flexibility through learning and practicing skills (coping strategies) that increase our openness to the present moment, our awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and engagement with what really matters to us.
This six-hour training introduces behavioral health providers to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a third-wave cognitive-behavioral approach grounded in Relational Frame Theory and functional contextualism. Participants will explore the ACT model of psychological flexibility and learn the concepts of acceptance, defusion, present-moment awareness, self-as-context, values clarification, and committed action. We will examine how psychological inflexibility contributes to a wide range of clinical concerns, from anxiety and depression to substance use and chronic pain.
Clinicians will leave with practical strategies for weaving ACT processes into individual sessions, including experiential exercises, metaphors, and values-based goal setting. This training is designed for providers across disciplines who are looking to expand their theoretical framework and offer clients a more flexible, values-driven path toward meaningful change
Learning Objectives
- Identify two ways in which Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is different from second-wave cognitive behavioral therapies to ensure model fidelity when treating individuals in community healthcare settings.
- Apply the concept of “creative hopelessness” in clinical interventions , leading to increased willingness and letting go of unhelpful control strategies among clients.
- Explain the six core processes of ACT and their application in clinical practice settings for building psychological flexibility among individuals receiving services.
- Apply six methods for engaging in the present, increasing openness, and promoting values in clinical practice to promote meaningful change among behavioral health clients.
- Design at least two templates for incorporating values-based goal setting into clinical practice for supporting meaningful change among behavioral health clients.
