Training Description

The Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI), introduced in the DSM-5, provides a structured set of questions designed to help clinicians meaningfully integrate cultural factors into case conceptualization and intervention. The workshop intends to take the clinician beyond simply asking the questions and integrate the why.

Learning Objectives

  1. Utilize at least three techniques for eliciting an individual’s view of the problem when conducting a DSM V Cultural Formulation Interview to enhance clinical understanding of how the client’s culture impacts their mental health and coping.
  2. List at least three types of stressors and supports to probe during a DSM V Cultural Formulation Interview to foster client resilience through the incorporation of natural supports.
  3. Explain at least two ways that traumatic stress and systemic racism can impact the DSM V Cultural Formulation Interview and practice protocols for creating safety and trust and reducing the risk of re-traumatization.

This session is a starting point for ongoing reflection on integrating culture and diversity into clinical practice—a journey that is never truly complete.
