Beyond Fixing: Reclaiming the Child Therapist's Role in Family Healing

Training Description

Clinicians and child providers are often pulled into the expectation of “fixing” a child’s behaviors, emotions, or functioning — a pressure that can create exhaustion, frustration, and even rupture with caregivers.  Join us to learn how to teach caregivers how to build their skills and confidence in fostering child development.

This workshop is designed to help therapists recognize the subtle ways the “fixer role” shows up in clinical work and offers strategies to shift toward collaboration, curiosity, and shared responsibility for change. Participants will learn practical approaches for operationalizing symptoms, reframing progress, and setting realistic therapeutic goals.

Learning Objectives

  1. Implement at least two tools, such as weekly symptom tracking as an engagement strategy, activating caregivers as collaborative partners in their children’s treatment.
  2. Apply the five processes of Functional Behavioral Analysis with caregivers to identify the underlying drivers of children’s symptoms and behaviors, and to recognize patterns where caregivers may unintentionally reinforce problematic behaviors.
  3. Apply at least 2 approaches for increasing caregivers’ parenting self-efficacy and active involvement in their child’s treatment.

Upon completing the live virtual training, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance for attending the training.
