Learning Objectives

  1. Identify at least three potential stressors for youth diagnosed with IDD or ASD.
  2. Apply at least three interventions to help provide emotional regulation for youth with IDD and/or ASD during a crisis situation.
  3. Determine at least three interventions to help engage and support caregivers while managing a crisis situation with youth with IDD or ASD.
  4. Discuss at least three non-verbal communication strategies that can be used to communicate with youth diagnosed with IDD or ASD.
  5. Explain at least three examples of cultural differences among youth with IDD or ASD that should be considered when providing a crisis intervention.
  6. Practice identifying at least three interventions that can be used to address a crisis situation in hypothetical examples of a young person with IDD or ASD in crisis. 

Psychologists: Psychologists - APA: California Institute for Behavioral Health Solutions is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. California Institute for Behavioral Health Solutions maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Course meets the qualifications for pending hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences; and CIBHS is an approved provider for the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) to sponsor continuing education for Behavioral health professionals including clinicians practicing TF-CBT who are aiming for proficiency certification or any TF-CBT clinician seeking a refresher course. CIBHS maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.

Certified Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists are eligible to earn 5.5 continuing education hours as CIBHS is a CalMHSA-approved CE training provider.

All activities in this training are offered for continuing education credit excluding any breaks. Training Description

In this training, participants will explore practical strategies for communicating effectively during a crisis, with an emphasis on adapting approaches to meet the unique needs of youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism. The training will address ways to prevent crises before they occur, focusing on proactive supports, environmental modifications, and skills that help youth remain regulated and safe. Participants will also learn steps for supporting recovery after a crisis, assisting both individuals and families in regaining stability and confidence. 

The training will highlight the essential role of caregivers, examining how to involve families and support staff in both crisis response and prevention efforts. Attention will also be given to cultural differences in communication and stress responses, ensuring that care is delivered in a manner that is respectful, inclusive, and effective across diverse communities. Finally, participants will leave with practical resources and tools for developing individualized safety plans and strategies, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to respond to crises safely, compassionately, and effectively.

Upon completing the live virtual training, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance for attending the training.
