Training Description
Through implementation of the Behavioral Health Services Act (BHSA), California providers are expected to broaden their approach to behavioral health by strengthening the integration of mental health and substance use disorder services while emphasizing prevention, early intervention, equitable access, workforce development, and coordinated systems of care. This transformation calls for stronger cross-disciplinary collaboration among behavioral health providers, SUD treatment professionals, healthcare organizations, county systems, and community-based partners to ensure individuals receive seamless, whole-person support throughout the continuum of care.
Despite overwhelming evidence and broad clinical consensus that co-occurring disorders should be addressed and treated simultaneously, systems of care continue to operate in silos—often leading to fragmented care and poorer outcomes. Integrated treatment where addiction and mental health disorders are treated at the same time often by the same team leads to:
- Better engagement and retention
- Reduced use
- Improved psychiatric/psychological symptoms
- Lower relapse rates
- Reduced hospitalization
This workshop provides an overview of Integrated Treatment for Co-Occurring Disorders (ITCD) for behavioral health providers. Participants will explore why co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders are most effectively addressed through integrated, stage-matched approaches rather than siloed systems of care. This training provides participants with practical skills and implementation strategies that strengthen integrated service delivery and align with emerging BHSA priorities.
