Training Description

Substance use disorder and trauma are often interconnected, with research showing that nearly 75% of people with substance use disorder have a history of trauma. Some experts believe the rate is even higher. Trauma can be a driving factor in substance misuse, as individuals may turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with the emotional pain and distress caused by their experiences. Substance misuse can, in turn, worsen the effects of trauma and make recovery more challenging.

This live, virtual training via Zoom is designed for behavioral health providers, peer support specialists, and other professionals working with individuals affected by substance use and trauma. Participants will learn about behaviors associated with attempts to cope with trauma through substance use, review protective and risk factors for SUD, and identify symptoms and reactions related to trauma. The session will also explore diversity and cultural considerations in trauma-informed care to improve equity and treatment outcomes.

All training materials will be provided the week prior to the training

Join us to learn, reflect, and expand on the follow:

  • Conceptualize cases through an integrative lens
  • Recognize cultural, social, and systemic factors such racism and poverty and how they contribute to trauma and substance use vulnerability
  • Apply trauma-informed principles when assessing and working with individuals who have co-occurring substance use and trauma.
  • Demonstrate intervention strategies that are grounded in evidence
